The 'Arizona movie'?

Arguably, nobody has made the quintessential “Arizona movie” yet, not in the sense that “Annie Hall” is the quintessential New York movie, or “Chinatown” is the quintessential Los Angeles movie.
“Raising Arizona” has its champions, but wasn’t that just Ivy League film wonks having fun at the expense of us rubes?
Maybe there’s no “Arizona movie” because there’s no defined “Arizona experience.” At least, not until now, with the nation focusing on the state’s intractable immigration crisis.
And maybe that will benefit Gomez and Melendez, who seem to be in the right place in the right time to tell their story.
Presume, for a minute, that their notional feature film does become a huge Sundance hit. Are these politically neutral filmmakers ready to become lightning rods in the immigration debate?
If they don’t want to view the movie in political terms, it stands to reason that others will. Already, their short film has been profiled in several Spanish-language media outlets, including Telemundo.
“To be totally honest with you, that’s one thing I wish I didn’t have to deal with,” Gomez says. “We understand that this is the sort of thing that brings a lot of heat, from both sides. But right now, it’s just a labor of love.”
